2000 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor Puente Alto

I have been on a quest lately to find great Chilean Cabs. There are someĀ great ones out there but finding them in the local wine shop is the problem. I have experienced the Don Melchor before (the 2002 vintage is very good as well). This vintage is coming into it’s own right now and drinking very well. It has a very dark purple color that holds all the way to the rim. The nose on this wine (after an hour in the decanter) is cassis and clove. Most of the earthy tones fall off after some time in the decanter. You really must give this wine some time to breathe to full enjoy it. The flavor structure is complex with cassis, prune, blackberry and tobacco all working nicely together. Tannins are fine and well integrated. This is an outstanding wine and for the price ($40) it’s value is extraordinary.
