2004 Alban Vineyards Syrah Reva Alban Estate Vineyard

I have virtually no experience with any of the Rhone varietals. I took a chance and signed up for the mailing list for Alban Vineyards because James Laube reviewed this wine so highly in Wine Spectator. When you have little to no experience in a particular vaietal you have to rely on someone to help you navigate you way through the thousands of wines that are released each year. In this case I’m glad I took his advice.

This is a very powerful wine. The nose is full of grilled meats and dark berry. On the palate the wine shows its youth and it a little on the hot side but the complex layers of dark fruit and smoky flavors show through. Also, it has a burst of cherry in the middle which was quite a nice surprise. The finish is long and tannic. It will be interesting to see how this wine ages and with 16.7% alcohol one would assume it has the potential.

If you are looking for a extra nice bottle that you won’t mind paying a little extra for then this wine will fit the bill nicely.
