2004 Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot

I have been experimenting these days with French wines. Red Bordeaux specifically. I have very little experience with French wines so I thought I would buys a few inexpensive wines that I could compare with similarly priced wines from California and Washington.  Call me unsophisticated but the winners hands down (at least in the value category) are the wines from California and Washington. I was familiar with this producer and varietal from the previous vintage. The color was a nice hue of purple. The wine was very pleasant on the nose with plumb, coconut and a touch of leather. This wine was also very lush across the palate with flavors of plumb, black cherry and some green olive. It all works very well together. Tannins are light and well integrated. When you also throw into the mix that this wine is just below nine dollars a bottle it’s one of (if not the) best values of the year.
