2004 Chateau Montelena Zinfandel Estate (Napa Valley)

Very dark purple color. The nose has an interesting cinnamon overtone to the boysenberry aroma. The flavors are dominated by a very fruit forward and jammy black raspberry note with cedar and black pepper kicking in on the long finish. The tannins linger on the finish as well. An excellent value for the $20 price point.

2005 Rosenblum Cellars Petite Sirah Pickett Road Vineyard (Napa Valley)

Dark as night purple. A good candidate for the blue teeth club. The nose gives a nice mix of chocolate, currant and black pepper. The fruit is very forward with chocolate covered  dark cherries leading the way then currant and a slight citrus hit at the end of the finish. Not quite what I would call  “classic” petite sirah style but interesting nonetheless. At $33 there are some better options at the same or better price point.

2005 Bennett Lane Maximus Napa Valley

Dark inky purple in color. After an hour in the decanter the aromas were a nice mix of floral violets, blueberry and currant. The flavors were ripe currant, black cherry, raspberry and vanilla. The finish is long and tannic. This wine might need a little more time in bottle to be fully enjoyed but it’s very good now. At $35 this is a very, very good wine for the money.

2004 Robert Mondavi Winery Merlot (Napa Valley)

The color is a nice shade of dark purple. The aromatics are faint hints of blackberry and  dark cherry. The dark cherry continues through the palate picking up sage spice hints and some vanilla as well. The finish is very tannic with cedar and cigar box hanging on till the end. It’s good but not great.

2005 Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha (Chile, Colchagua Valley)

This wine had a dark ruby color. The nose was dark cherry and leather. The flavors were an interesting mix of red cherry, graphite and licorice. The finish was medium length and held the mineral edge all the way through. This wine tasted a little different that the previous vintages. It almost has a Carmenere overtone. I perfer the 2004 but this is also a solid effort.

2006 DuMOL Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

A nice golden and yellow straw color. The nose gives off a beautiful honeydew and mineral mix. The flavors are lemon oil, vanilla, and a slight mineral aftertaste. This wine is significantly oaked so if that’s not your thing you might find it a bit too much. It did not bother me in that I found it in balance with everything else. Very well made and four square. At $50 this wine is a little outside of what I would consider a “good QPR” but it is a nice indulgence.

2005 Artesa Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa Valley

The color is a very nice dark hue of purple.Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The nose is still a little closed but does offer vanilla and cedar. The flavors are understated cherry, cassis and spicebox. The tannins are present all the way through the medium length finish. This wine might improve a little with additional bottle age.

2003 Hogue Cellars Merlot Genesis (Washington, Columbia Valley)

Dark purple in color. The nose gives off hints of currant and earthy currant. The flavors are black currant, graphite and very forward tannins that last all the way through the finish. More Bordeaux in style than your classic Washington Merlot. I noticed a good deal of sediment so decant for best results. Good for the price ($12) but drink now.

2004 St. Francis Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County

Dark purple that becomes translucent at the rim. The nose gives off a lighter cherry aroma and some vanilla as well. The flavors are dark cherry, blackberry and coconut. Very tannic on the finish. Might need some additional bottle age. Not bad for the price ($14.00).

2006 Bogle Vineyards Zinfandel Old Vine California

Not quite as dark a purple as you would expect from a old vine zin. The aromas were cherry, black pepper and briar. The flavors were slightly muted but consisted of blackberry, cherry and coconut. The finish was medium length and picked up licorice and a fair amount of tannins. Good for the price range.
