2006 Audelssa Estate Winery Summit (Sonoma County)

Cherry and vanilla on the nose with a hint of spice. The wine still seems a bit young. The fruit shows red cherry, wild red berry and tobacco with a hit of black pepper on the finish. It’s fairly tannic from mid palate on. A blend of the Bordeaux varietals from Sonoma County, this red wine is a good buy. It needs a little more time in the bottle or extended time in the decanter to be fully enjoyed.

2006 Tiza Malbec (Argentina, Mendoza)

Inky black color. The nose had a harmony of scents such as anise seed, plumb stew and almost candy apple. There is a nice balance of fruit and acidity with blackberry and plumb leading the way. The tannins were fine- grained and last all the way through the medium length finish. The Mendoza region of Argentina is generally regarded as one of the very best places in the world to grow Malbec as the climate allows for the required long hang time to make great balanced wines. This wine is very good for the money ($20.00). Tiza uses 100% Malbec fruit for this wine.

2006 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Botella

Overall this Pinot is good but not great. It’s silky smooth but is slightly lacking in fruit. There are hints of tart Botellared berry flavors and a touch of spice. The finish is short and the tannins are still heavy on the end. The Botella vineyard has rich, well-drained clay loam soil.  The site features southern exposure and the cool microclimate of the Santa Ynez River canyon which is in the Santa Rite Hills AVA.

2006 Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon H3

columbia-crest_h3Spicy plumb stew on the nose on this “great for the money” Cabernet Sauvignon from the Horse Heaven Hills (H3) region of Eastern Washington. The flavors are a ripe mix of plumb, red cherry, anise, mint, and black pepper. The mouth feel is a nice balance of softness and fine grained tannins. This wine from the Horse Heaven Hills region of Washington is quite the value. Winemaker Ray Einberger has done an excellent job with this designated Cabernet Sauvignon for two vintages in a row. For those looking for a value fruit forward Cabernet this wine fits the bill. Unlike most quality Cabernet Sauvignon’s from Washington this wine is readily available and can be found in many grocery store wine sections.
