2005 Ballast Stone Petit Verdot (Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Currency Creek / McLaren Vale)

It’s not often that one gets the opportunity to taste a single varietal Petit Verdot so I took one and tried this wine. As one would expect the color is deep purple. The nose shows violets, spice box and a mineral hint. In the mouth this wine is thick and chewy with black cherry and anise spice. A little goes a long way. It’s clear why winemakers use this wine in dribs and drabs to blend with the Bordeaux varietals because it’s powerful stuff.  This wine comes from South Australia as well so it’s very fruit forward. Interesting for a one off try but not all that exciting.

2007 Mollydooker Shiraz Blue Eyed Boy (McLaren Vale)

Deep, almost black color. Big nose full of blueberry syrup, cedar and smoke. Huge flavors of black raspberry, pepper and blueberry. Very, very fruit forward. This wine is classic Mollydooker in style and substance. Fruit for this Shiraz comes from the McLauren Vale area of South Australia. This wines needs rich or spicy food to be fully enjoyed.

2005 Elderton Cabernet Sauvignon Friends (Australia, Barossa)

Deep purple in color. The nose has notes of wild blackberry, cElderton_Friends_2005herry and cedar. Across the palate this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot was jam packed with black fruit that was very forward but not in the way. The tannins were fine grained and lingered on the medium finish. Most of the Cabernet grapes for this moderately priced red wine blend were sourced from the Eden Valley. The Merlot fruit came from the Barossa Valley. Although slightly singular in it’s complexity it is very enjoyable and easy to drink. A good introduction to this producer at a good price. 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot.

2006 Tir Na N’og Grenache (South Australia, McLaren Vale)

Tir Na NogDark inky purple in color. The nose has distinct notes of licorice and tobacco. Across the palate this wine has an interesting medleyof black fruit, citrus and and a touch of smoke. The fruit for this wine comes from old vine Grenache vineyards in the McLauren Vale in South Australia. As these vines are old their yields are low so the flavors the fruit  produces are more intense.  Well put together, easy drinking and light enough for summer enjoyment.

2006 Pillar Box Red (Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Padthaway)

pillar_box_redDark inky purple color. The aromas are mostly blackberry and dried mint. On the palate the Shiraz leads the way. It’s juicy with cherry and blackberry  flavors that are slightly tart. Restrained in a good way in that it is not the “Auzzie Fruit Bomb” you would expect for a wine in this price range. Although it’s fairly tannic they stay out of the way until the end of the finish for the most part. The majority of the fruit in this wine comes from their estate vineyard in Padthaway which is on the Limestone Coast Appellation in South Australia. The wine is a blend of Shiraz (50%) Cabernet Sauvignon (42%) and Merlot (8%). An excellent value at $9.

2007 Two Hands Shiraz Angels Share (Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale)

two-hands_angels-shareNose gives up raspberry and a touch of cedar. The flavors across the palate are more raspberry and spicy plum. The balance of fruit and acidity is more elegant than you would expect from this region. The finish is fairly tannic and is long lasting. Excellent Aussie Shiraz for the money.

2005 Bleasdale Langhorne Crossing (Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek)

The nose is full of red cherry. Across the palate there are hints of currant and spice but they are overwhelmed by a strong cranberry note. Lacks complexity and any sort of finish. Not flawed in anyway but nothing very good to reference either.

2004 Nine Stones Hilltops Shiraz (Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales)

hilltops_shirazTart cherry and blackberry are the dominate flavors for this moderately spicy Shiraz. The palate also picks up some green bell pepper through the finish. If you like the plush Aussie Shiraz style then this wine might not be for you but it is good in it’s own rustic style.

2005 Yellow Tail Merlot The Reserve (Australia, South Eastern)

Dark garnet to light purple in color. The nose was a bit closed with nothing jumping out of the glass. The flavors were a pleasant combination of currant, red pepper, creme de caccao. Although it’s a rather simple wine it’s pleasant nonetheless. Good QPR for the under $9 price point.
