2007 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Marqués de Casa Concha (Chile)

Red fruit and tar on the nose after an hour in the decanter. The wine was a bit tart which I found unusual for this label based on previous vintages. Cherry and red licorice flavors are the most notable with smoke and a mineral edge in the mix as well. The finish is medium length with the tannins gripping all the way through.  A little disappointing in that this wine is usually excellent. It’s not bad by any measure but this vintage  is just “good”. From the Puente Alto region of the Maipo Valley which also falls in the Central Valley area.

2006 Casa Lapostolle Merlot Cuvée Alexandre

Very dark purple in color. The nose is spice box, cedar and black fruit. Across thCasa Lapostolle_Merlote palate this wine has a lot going on. Plumb and currant fruit lead the way with anise, black pepper and dark chocolate notes following at the end. The tannins are still big and linger on the finish but will lay down with a little more bottle time. This blend of 85% Merlot and 15 % Carmenere comes from Casa Lapostolle’s Apalta Vineyard which is located in the Rapel Valley sub appellation of Chile’s Central Valley. It’s blended with the Carmenere to as some structure and spice. Very good vintage from a very consistent producer.

2006 Geo Wines Chono Reserva Syrah (Chile, Coquimbo, Elqui Valley)

Chono_SyrahDeep dark purple with black hues. The nose is full of spice, blackberry, dark roast coffee and a touch of smoke. The palate has plenty of juicyblack cherry and blackberry fruit with tobacco and mineral notes that mix well with the minty herb flavors at the end. The tannins are well integrated and hang on through the medium length finish. Very good. The Elqui Valley is located 500 kilometers north of Santiago, Chile and close to the Pacific Ocean which makes for cooling breeze and longer hang time for ripeness.  The yields are only 9 tons per hectare and the fruit shows a very high concentration.  The grapes were handpicked according the ripe levels. 10% of the wine was racked in new French and American oak barrels for 6 months with the remainder in stainless steel barrels. Overall very enjoyable and a extremely good value at $11.

2006 Viña Santa Rita Cabernet Sauvignon Medalla Real Reserva Especial Single Estate (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley)

Dark opaque purple in color. The nose was a little closed but did show some black fVina_Santa_Rita_2006ruit, tobacco and alcohol. The flavors across the palate were cassis, blackberry, licorice and smoke. The finish in medium to long in length and picks up a minty note at the end. The tannins are chewy but stay out of the way until the very end. This Cabernet is textured and interesting because of all that is going on and how it unfolds. Excellent example of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon and a good value too at around $14. From the Maipo Valley this wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Santa Rita continues it’s run of excellent vintages with this single estate designated wine.

2006 Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha (Chile, Central Valley, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley)

Dark crimson in color. Very fruit forward and lush. The nose is full of black fruit and hints of licorice and smoke. Lots of pronounced black cherry, currant and smoky tobacco flavors that mix well with the sturdy tannins. The finish is medium length. Aged in French oak it’s built to drink now. Good QPR. Vina Montes consistently produces very good and affordable Cabernet Sauvignon’s year after year.  Colchagua Valley, in Chile’s alpha_cabernetsauvignon1Central Valley, has warm summer days and cooler nights which make for ideal conditions to produce ripe Cabernet grapes. Another great effort for the money ($18).

2005 Los Maquis Calcu (Chile, Central Valley, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley)

2005_calcuThe nose is full of smoke and red fruit. Although this wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère it’s the Carmenère notes that are most prominent to me. The red fruit turns a bit tart across the palate and there is also notes of tar and dusty wildberry. The gripping tannins linger on the finish. This wine is from Chile’s Colchagua Valley which is known for rich Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere. It’s not great but it’s good for the price which is around $10.

2006 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

2005-don-melchor1Dark toasted oak and blackberry aromas lead the way. Black currant, smokey tobacco, tar hints, fig compote and dark chocolate add to the complexity across the palate. The finish has a very earthy note and is lingering. A nice balance of fruit and minerality. Another excellent effort. Decant for now.

2006 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Marqués de Casa Concha

Very dark purple in color. The nose is full of espresso, black currant. The currant holds on through the palate then vanilla, oak and earthy dark chocolate kick in as well. Very long and tmarques_casa_concha1annic finish. Needs a little more time in bottle but excellent now.

2006 Casa Lapostolle Cabernet Sauvignon Cuvée Alexandre Apalta Vineyard (Chile, Central Valley, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley)

626381The color is a deep purple. The  nose gives off notes of Herbes de Provence and blackberry. The blackberry holds on across the palate and also picks up vanilla and a strong mineral edge. The tannins and a little rough still. It might soften with more time but it will still be very tannic. Not quite up to previous vintages but good nonetheless.

2005 Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha (Chile, Colchagua Valley)

This wine had a dark ruby color. The nose was dark cherry and leather. The flavors were an interesting mix of red cherry, graphite and licorice. The finish was medium length and held the mineral edge all the way through. This wine tasted a little different that the previous vintages. It almost has a Carmenere overtone. I perfer the 2004 but this is also a solid effort.
