2008 Delectus Cuvee Julia

Had my first opportunity to try the 2008 Delectus Cuvee Julia last night. While still a bit young this is a huge wine that will continue to get better with a little patience. Opened and decanted for about an hour.  BiDelectus Duvee Julia 2008g currant and ripe blackberry with a hint of earthiness. Still a little tannic on the long finish so it needs a bit more time.  While it’s drinking well now, another year and it will be good to go. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from the Delectus Estate in Knights Valley. It is made with 50% Napa Valley fruit and 50% Knights Valley fruit. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah and Merlot.

2008 Buehler Vineyards Zinfandel (Napa Valley)

Lighter garnet color. The nose shows plum stew, anise and a hint of honeysuckle. On the palate this wine shows a great balance of fruit and acidity. The fruit is classic Napa Zin with plum leading the way but also some raspberry pepper and vanilla. The finish is medium to long and shows a nice mineral edge to add to the complexity. This wine is both fruit forward and elegant. If you are looking for an over the top extracted style this isn’t it. However this Zinfandel is great for its restraint and softness while still showing pure fruit flavors. A good value and a very well made wine.

2007 Robert Foley Griffin (Napa Valley)

Very dark purple color. The nose was faint but had hints of toasty oak and red fruit. Flavors of sweet cherry, black currant and smoke. The fruit for this wine comes from the Howell Mountain area of the Napa Valley. It’s a “kitchen sink” type of blend which is a good thing in this case because it allows the winemaker (Bob Foley) the freedom to blend without the  boundaries associated with varietal guidelines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Charbono and Petite Sirah are all in the mix. Great QPR at $32.00.  For years Robert Foley was the winemaker at Pride and now out on his own.

2007 Carter Cellars Merlot Truchard Vineyard (Napa Valley)

This wine is very young and will no doubt improve with additional bottle time. The nose shows notes of bay leaf, red fruit and violets. Plumb, cedar and spice are the predominate flavors across the palate. The tannins are big and burly now but will lay down with another year or two in bottle. It has the structure to age gracefully so give it some time. The Truchard vineyard is in the cooler Carneros region at the bottom of the the Napa Valley which well suited for growing Merlot.

2005 Bennett Lane Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

05Cab-BennettThe nose has glass filling notes of wild berry, spice and oak. Across the palate currant dominates the profile with shadings of vanilla, plum and an ending mineral edge. The tannins arestill a little aggressive but may soften with more bottle time. This producers is very consistent and is one of the better “value” Napa Cabernet Sauvignons today. I say “value” because it’s rare to find a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon of this quality for $55.  Excellent.

2006 Realm Cellars The Bard Napa Valley

Realm_BardBeautiful currant and plumb notes on the nose. The currant and plumb hang on throuhg the palatte with some spice and cherry notes on top. The finish is long and balanced with the oaky note hanging on till the end. This red wine blend consists of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Petit Verdot and 12% Merlot. The fruit for tis wine was sourced from vineyards in Oakville, Yountville, St. Helena, and Coombsville and aged in 100% French Oak. Excellent.

2005 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Frank_2005_CabThe nose had very floral notes with violets showing most prominently. The mouth feel was balanced with ripe red fruit, cedar and a hint of currant in the mix. The finish was medium length and had a hit of the hefty tannins at the end but these should lay down some with additional bottle time. Very good and very interesting. The grapes for this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon come from the S & J Vineyard which is east of the Vaca Mountain range in Napa’s Capell Valley.

2004 Delectus Cuvée Julia Napa

2004_JuilaI reached into the back of the cellar and found this terrific red wine blend from the 2004 vintage. Deep, dark purple in color. The nose gave hints of currant, esprasso, and damp earth. The mouth feel was velvety, with currant, black cherry, and cedar flavors bursting forth. Extremely complex and well put together. It’s a fruit foward blend that workes very well together. Outstanding still. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Merlot.

2007 Orin Swift The Prisoner Napa Valley

orin_swift_theprisonerAromas of white pepper and black fruit fill the glass.  Flavors of wild blackberry, currant, licorice, and blueberry lead the way in this fruit forward wine. Plenty of spice and lingering tannins on the finish. Well structured and, despite the fact that it clocks in at 15.2% alcohol, it’s easy to drink. The Prisoner is 50% Zinfandel, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 9% Petite Sirah, 2% Charbono, 1% Grenache all sourced from the Napa Valley.

2005 Bennett Lane Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa Valley

05CabReserve-LargeDark, extracted purple color. The nose shows cedar , cocoa powder and lots of black cherry notes. In the mouth this wine has a very balanced mix of fruit and mineral notes such as black currant, plumb, cedar and nutmeg. The tannins are very fine and well integrated. The fruit for this winner is sourced from the Taplin 2 block of Lewelling vineyard in St Helena and the Lynch Family Vineyard, from owner Randy and Lisa’s Estate in Calistoga. Elegant but plenty of fruit forward enjoyment as well. Outstanding. If you get the chance to visit the Napa Valley make sure you drop by their tasting room. It’s very relaxed and a fun time.
