2006 Audelssa Estate Winery Summit (Sonoma County)

Cherry and vanilla on the nose with a hint of spice. The wine still seems a bit young. The fruit shows red cherry, wild red berry and tobacco with a hit of black pepper on the finish. It’s fairly tannic from mid palate on. A blend of the Bordeaux varietals from Sonoma County, this red wine is a good buy. It needs a little more time in the bottle or extended time in the decanter to be fully enjoyed.

2007 Delectus Cabernet Franc (Knights Valley)

Ruby red color. The nose is big with black cherry, spice box, plum and bell pepper. The palate is also large with the cherry and plum carrying on and the addition of vanilla, and strawberry. The finish is long and picks up a good mineral note to add to the complexity. The fruit was sourced from a mature hillside vineyard across from the Delectus Estate located in Knights Valley in Sonoma County just west of Calistoga. Although this wine is young it is drinking well now. Save some though as it will get better with additional bottle age. Highly recommended.

2007 Tamarack Cellars Cabernet Franc Wahluke Slope

Dusty cherry and spice on the nose. This wine is a bit young but still shows nice blackberry and plumb fruit across the palate with hints of spice and tobacco. The finish is moderately tannic and lingering. An excellent value at $28. The fruit for this red wine comes from the Wahluke Slope AVA around Yakima, Washington. It’s one of the warmest climate growing regions in Washington state. Gravelly, rocky soil, combined with a dry, warm climate, make Wahluke Slope one of the best places in Washington to grow wine grapes.

2006 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Botella

Overall this Pinot is good but not great. It’s silky smooth but is slightly lacking in fruit. There are hints of tart Botellared berry flavors and a touch of spice. The finish is short and the tannins are still heavy on the end. The Botella vineyard has rich, well-drained clay loam soil.  The site features southern exposure and the cool microclimate of the Santa Ynez River canyon which is in the Santa Rite Hills AVA.

2005 Bennett Lane Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

05Cab-BennettThe nose has glass filling notes of wild berry, spice and oak. Across the palate currant dominates the profile with shadings of vanilla, plum and an ending mineral edge. The tannins arestill a little aggressive but may soften with more bottle time. This producers is very consistent and is one of the better “value” Napa Cabernet Sauvignons today. I say “value” because it’s rare to find a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon of this quality for $55.  Excellent.

2007 Ridge Three Valleys Sonoma

Abundant aromas of wild berry and spice. In the mouth the wild berry continues and adds tart cherry, a nutty flavor and a hit of spice and tannin that firm up on the finish. Really stands up to hot and spicy food. Needs a little more time in the bottle.  A blend of 76% Zinfandel, 8% Petite Sirah, 7% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 3% Carignane. The grapes are sourced from nine different vineyards throughout Sonoma County. The Three Valleys in the name refer to the Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley and the Russian River Valley. The wine is aged in 100% American oak barrels for nine months.

2006 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana Tuscany

Deep purple in color. Aromas of sandalwood, currant and plumTenuta_San Guido_2006b stew. A nice balanceof mineralityand black fruit on the palate. The tannins are present on the long finish but not in the way. Classic Italian Super Tucsan blend. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 10% Sangiovese.

2004 Delectus Cuvée Julia Napa

2004_JuilaI reached into the back of the cellar and found this terrific red wine blend from the 2004 vintage. Deep, dark purple in color. The nose gave hints of currant, esprasso, and damp earth. The mouth feel was velvety, with currant, black cherry, and cedar flavors bursting forth. Extremely complex and well put together. It’s a fruit foward blend that workes very well together. Outstanding still. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Merlot.

2006 Realm Cellars The Tempest (Napa)

Realm_TempestThe nose had a distinct mineral aroma along with hints of wild red fruit. Across the palate there were notes of plumb, raspberry, wild red berries. The tannins are chunky and hang on through the finish. Rustic but enjoyable. This red blendconsists of 68% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. The fruit is sourced from vineyards in Yountville, St. Helena and Pope Valley and was aged in 100% new French Oak (mix of Taransaud, Darnajou and Sylvain).

2007 Orin Swift The Prisoner Napa Valley

orin_swift_theprisonerAromas of white pepper and black fruit fill the glass.  Flavors of wild blackberry, currant, licorice, and blueberry lead the way in this fruit forward wine. Plenty of spice and lingering tannins on the finish. Well structured and, despite the fact that it clocks in at 15.2% alcohol, it’s easy to drink. The Prisoner is 50% Zinfandel, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 9% Petite Sirah, 2% Charbono, 1% Grenache all sourced from the Napa Valley.
