2007 DuMOL Syrah Eddie’s Patch (Russian River Valley)

The nose is slightly closed still but shows blackberry, black pepper and damp earth. In the mouth it’s a nice balance of fruit and acidity meaning it’s not over the top with fruit. Blackberry, coconut and sassafras flavors lead the way with a peppery finish thats lingering. “Eddies Patch” is part of the Hoppe-Kelly Vineyard located in the cool northern end of the Russian River Valley. A great example of new world Syrah from California. Another outstanding effort from this very consistent producer.

2007 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Franc (Sonoma)

Almost dark ruby color. Very aromatic nose after about an hour in the decanter showing black fruit and a hint of coconut. Medium body in the mouth with very structured notes of the black currant, black raspberry bell pepper, and a hit of spice at the finish. Elegant and easy to drink. Excellent effort. The fruit for this wine comes from the Sonoma county side of this vineyard which straddles the lines between Sonoma and Napa county. It’s still a bit young but drinking very well now. Put a bottle or two down for a couple of years.

2006 Audelssa Estate Winery Summit (Sonoma County)

Cherry and vanilla on the nose with a hint of spice. The wine still seems a bit young. The fruit shows red cherry, wild red berry and tobacco with a hit of black pepper on the finish. It’s fairly tannic from mid palate on. A blend of the Bordeaux varietals from Sonoma County, this red wine is a good buy. It needs a little more time in the bottle or extended time in the decanter to be fully enjoyed.

2007 DuMOL Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

Pale garnet in color. The nose had bold raspberry and cola notes. Nice mix of fruit and acidity on the palate with red cherry, raspberry and a mineral notes that lingers. This wine is a very good example of a California Pinot Noir. Big and bold but not over the top. Excellent.

2007 Delectus Cabernet Franc (Knights Valley)

Ruby red color. The nose is big with black cherry, spice box, plum and bell pepper. The palate is also large with the cherry and plum carrying on and the addition of vanilla, and strawberry. The finish is long and picks up a good mineral note to add to the complexity. The fruit was sourced from a mature hillside vineyard across from the Delectus Estate located in Knights Valley in Sonoma County just west of Calistoga. Although this wine is young it is drinking well now. Save some though as it will get better with additional bottle age. Highly recommended.

2007 Ridge Three Valleys Sonoma

Abundant aromas of wild berry and spice. In the mouth the wild berry continues and adds tart cherry, a nutty flavor and a hit of spice and tannin that firm up on the finish. Really stands up to hot and spicy food. Needs a little more time in the bottle.  A blend of 76% Zinfandel, 8% Petite Sirah, 7% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 3% Carignane. The grapes are sourced from nine different vineyards throughout Sonoma County. The Three Valleys in the name refer to the Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley and the Russian River Valley. The wine is aged in 100% American oak barrels for nine months.

2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Beautiful ruby red color. The nose shows oaky-woody spice notes as well as red red raspberry flavors. The mouth feel is in a sense lush which addKosta Brownes to the complexity because I found the fruit notes crisp and bright. Red, cherry, raspberry and spice hang on through the long finish that adds a hint of mineralitiy. This Ponot Nior seems more elegan that the Russian River botttling from the 2007 vintage. It is a blend of four vineyards. Two of the vineyards, Dutton Manzana and Kanzler are located near the southern end of the Russian River Valley appellation at the upper end of the Petaluma Gap. The remaining two, Gap’s Crown and Terra de Promissio, are located in the southern portion of the Sonoma Coast appellation lying directly in the path of the Petaluma Gap’s cooling influence. Kosta Browne continues it’s string of excellent Pinot Nior’s from Sonoma.

2006 DuMOL Syrah Russian River Valley (USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley)

2006_DuMol_RRV_SyrahThis wine is a very dark hue of purple. Sweet black fruit and caramel aromas fill the glass. Plenty of black currant, blackberry and vanilla balanced nicely with a mineral edge and spicebox across the palate. The tannins are well integrated and linger well past the long finish. A lot going on but all in it’s place. The grapes for this vintage were sourced from throughout the Russian River Valley which explains it’s even composition. Another excellent winefrom a very consistent producer of premium California style Syrah.

2006 DuMOL Chardonnay Chloe (USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley)

dumol_chardonnay_2006In the glass it’s a light  yellow-gold color. This Chardonnay shows aromas of peach, kiwi and a touch of mineral.  The flavors are a complex mix of  nectarine, pear, green apple, oak and flint. Sounds like a lot going on however it’s not a big jumble but a nicely layered unfolding of flavors. This is not a Chardonnay for the faint of heart nor for those who prefer unoaked versions. The 2006  Chloe from DuMol sources fruit from the Ritchie Vineyard which is situated  in the center of the Russian River appellation. Another outstanding effort from this producer.

2006 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley (USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley)

kosta-browne_rrvThe nose was cherry, raspberry and spice box. The flavors were bold and forward with ripe raspberry, cherry and vanilla leading the way with a hint of savory herbs andcola on the finish which is long and enjoyable. A very strong effort. This wine is at it’s peak now so drink up. Kosta Browne consistently produces some of the finest Pinot Noirs from Sonoma County. Dan Kosta and Michael Browne began their journey into wine from the restaurant industry. They produce small lots of high quality Pinot Noir and source grapes from the many different vineyards in the Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley AVA’s. As many as seven different vineyards contributed to the final blend of this RRV designated Pinot. It will be hard to find but worth the search.
